IOWA MUSIC SHOWCASE PODCAST - Episode 46: Iowa Star Wars Music, Part 4 of 9 - May the Fortieth be with You!

Welcome to the FIRST of our four-part series celebrating the greatest movie that was ever made!

This photo is from the 1978 Theodore Roosevelt High School Yearbook,
which carries no copyright.
The photographers are listed in the yearbook as:
Jeff Jones, Mark Tatarud, Mark Parker,
and a fourth name I cannot make out

And what, you ask, does Iowa have to do with Star Wars?

Not a whole lot! George Lucas isn't from here. And despite what you see on Facebook, Star Wars has been and never will be filmed here!

But a certain 13 year old from Des Moines, Iowa, did check out the film at the glorious, though torn down, Riviera/River Hills Theater! And he was blown away! And has been a die hard fan for 40 years!

A few years later, he discovered punk and the alternative music scene! And since that time, music and Star Wars have always played a central part in his life.

And it seems I am not the only Iowan like this! There are others! Others who actually know how to write and play instruments! And these Iowans have, like me here, combined their love of music and Star Wars.

And I am proud to present their work on the 40th anniversary of the greatest movie ever made!

I've also included a couple of bonus features.

Tom Hummer has done two albums of Star Wars related music under the name, The Han Solo Project. I've included the first of those two here. And I'll include the second one with the next podcast.

I've also included a video of The University of Northern Iowa Marching Band doing some Star Wars music.

PLAYLISTS: Iowa Science Music

Well, besides being a big geek on music, I also happen to geek out on science, (Yes, it is allowed to geek out on more than one thing!)

So in honor of today's March for Science (which I and my dog, Joe, will be doing in Des Moines), I put together this playlist of science-related songs by Iowa artists!

IOWA MUSIC SHOWCASE PODCAST - Episode 45: Iowa Blues and Blues Rock

The blues have been a strong part of the Iowa music scene for decades!

From its earliest days, when blues musician left the south and went up north to look for work, some stopped by, and some stayed in, our fair state.

And our state has shown its appreciation.

We have a number of blues societies here: Central Iowa Blues Society (based in Des Moines), The Southeast Iowa Blues Society (based in Fairfield), The South Skunk Blues Society (based in Newton), The Mississsippi Valley Blues Society (based in The Quad Cities), The Linn County Blues Society (based in Cedar Rapids), and The Lizard Creek Blues Society (based in Fort Dodge).

Plus, of course, we have the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame and our Winter Blues Fest every February in Des Moines.

So even though, I have featured the blues before in various posts and podcasts, we were long overdue for a podcast episode exclusively dedicated to it!

Once again, it is playlist time. And this time around, we're doing a random sampling of Iowa music that can be found on SoundCloud.

Our random shuffler picked a good deal of hip hop/rap, but we also have some metal, electronic house/trance music, acoustic music, and funk as well!

So sit back, relax, and check out some Iowa tunes!

OTHER SOURCES: DMMC'S 2006 compilation album

Since we recently covered the CarpeDM albums put out by The DMMC (Des Moines Music Coalition), with The Greater Des Moines Partnership, I thought we should cover an earlier work The DMMC did.

Turns out the CarpeDM albums were not The DMMC's first foray into compilation albums. Back when The DMMC first started, they came out with a compilation of Des Moines and Iowa artists called "Hear We Go".

From the BandCamp website:
"The hear and now. Here's to no more excuses. From the industry. Or the fans. Here's to no longer blaming the state for our state of mind. Here's to never being so close-minded that you can't believe for one tiny second that a single CD can put an entire city on the map. Here's to those who know good music can come from anywhere. And, to all of the naysayers, the never doers and the doubters who say it won't happen here. To those who say here is nowhere. Here it is. Hear we go.

"Special thanks: To the members of the DMMC, to our supporters, and to the musicians that enrich our lives and believe that a rising tide lifts all boats."

And for the 10th anniversary, the album was put on BandCamp. Thanks to the suggestion and urging of Iowa Music Showcase! And you can download it for FREE!

So go get yourself a taste of what was cool and happening in Des Moines's alternative music scene a decade ago!
