Katie Wedmore
As per usual, we have a rather eclectic mix of videos from IHearIC. We had acoustic guitar player, Katie Wedmore, keyboardist Matt Smart, and Tyler Swick, Aaron Ziegler, and Blake Shaw playing electric bass and steel drums.

PLAYLISTS: Random Iowa Music SoundCloud Playlist 3

Well, I tried to present a MySpace playlist, but it caused me nothing but problems and headaches. So I went back to a source that I knew would work - SoundCloud.

This is the third random playlist we've made on SoundCloud. The random sampler picked quite the variety - hip-hop, alternative, country, rock, and even some Arabic music and a parody!

Welcome to the last of our 4-part series honoring 40th anniversary of the greatest movie ever made!

We took a detour with the last 2 parts, one with non-Iowan midwestern artists and one that feature Iowa artists but wasn't really Star Wars music. With this one, we return to music inspired by Star Wars from Iowa artists!

And as a bonus, we feature the second album from The Han Solo Project below!

So let's join some Iowans on a visit to a long time ago in a galaxy far. far away!

IOWA MUSIC SHOWCASE PODCAST - Episode 46: Iowa Star Wars Music, Part 4 of 9 - May the Fortieth be with You!

Welcome to the FIRST of our four-part series celebrating the greatest movie that was ever made!

This photo is from the 1978 Theodore Roosevelt High School Yearbook,
which carries no copyright.
The photographers are listed in the yearbook as:
Jeff Jones, Mark Tatarud, Mark Parker,
and a fourth name I cannot make out

And what, you ask, does Iowa have to do with Star Wars?

Not a whole lot! George Lucas isn't from here. And despite what you see on Facebook, Star Wars has been and never will be filmed here!

But a certain 13 year old from Des Moines, Iowa, did check out the film at the glorious, though torn down, Riviera/River Hills Theater! And he was blown away! And has been a die hard fan for 40 years!

A few years later, he discovered punk and the alternative music scene! And since that time, music and Star Wars have always played a central part in his life.

And it seems I am not the only Iowan like this! There are others! Others who actually know how to write and play instruments! And these Iowans have, like me here, combined their love of music and Star Wars.

And I am proud to present their work on the 40th anniversary of the greatest movie ever made!

I've also included a couple of bonus features.

Tom Hummer has done two albums of Star Wars related music under the name, The Han Solo Project. I've included the first of those two here. And I'll include the second one with the next podcast.

I've also included a video of The University of Northern Iowa Marching Band doing some Star Wars music.

PLAYLISTS: Iowa Science Music

Well, besides being a big geek on music, I also happen to geek out on science, (Yes, it is allowed to geek out on more than one thing!)

So in honor of today's March for Science (which I and my dog, Joe, will be doing in Des Moines), I put together this playlist of science-related songs by Iowa artists!

Episode 38: Happy Hawkeye Holidays 2016, Part 1 of 3 - The Milk Edition

Well, once again we present you with Holiday tunes from and by Iowans.

And like last year, the first episode features more traditional tunes. The second will feature poppier far. And the last one more untraditional and risque stuff.

Although these songs tend to be mellow and laid back, we still have quite the variety with a world flute player, a choir from a Christian college, a gospel singer, a female folk singer, a female folk duo, and a recent Iowa Jazz Hall of Fame inductee!

So get your eggnog going, get a warm fire started, light up the tree, then sit back, relax, and enjoy holiday tunes as only Iowa can bring them to you!

PLAYLISTS: Random Iowa Music SoundCloud Playlist 1

Well, I've been making playlist of music from Spotify that is picked at random using shuffle. But I decided there is a lot of unheard Iowa music on SoundCloud. So I go on there once in a while and hunt down Iowa artists and follow them.

If you're an artist I'm NOT following, let me know, and I start following you. Just send a link to iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com!

So here's some artists from SoundCloud, totally picked at random. I even used a random number generator to pick them! The playlists features electronic music, world music, hip hop, folk, gospel, and piano music!

Other Sources: An Iowa folk and ethnic music compilation

I would like to thank Paul Hertz for telling me about this delightful Smithsonian Folkways collection of ethnic and folk music from our fair state, "Iowa State Fare: Music from the Heartland"! -We'll politely ignore the fact that they misspelled "fair"!

(For those who don't know, Paul Hertz is an Ames musician that has played in too many bands to mention. Mumford's probably being the most popular. But Paul also composes and performs classical pieces of his own. You can hear his music at https://soundcloud.com/paul-hertz.

And he does the local music show, "Ready, Ames, Fire", on Ames community station, KHOI. For all the details , go to http://khoifm.org/music-programs/ready-ames-fire. You can also listen to it, along with other KHOI shows, at http://archive.khoifm.org/.)

As for this album...

"Scandinavian string band melodies, Meskwaki Indian love songs, gospel harmonies, polkas, old-time fiddling, Mexican folk songs, and blues are some of the vibrant community-based musical traditions presented in this unique collection of Iowa music. Iowa State Fare showcases the vitality and diversity of the state's musical traditions on the occasion of the celebration of 150 years of Iowa statehood. These 1996 studio recordings feature eight ensembles and one solo performer selected to appear in the Iowa Sesquicentennial program at the Smithsonian Festival of American Folklife. The CD booklet features essays, bibliographic information, and lyrics with translations. 'The joys of Iowa's indigenous musics abound.' "
- from the Smithsonian Folkways website
