YOUR OWN PRIVATE IOWA - Episode 9: Courtney Krause

Courtney Krause comes in the studio this week, and compleatly blows me away with her music. Emotional, real singer-songwriter tunes that clearly have a strong impact on her and the audiance. We talk about this and so much more with in the show, making for an amazing conversation about her new album, recording in general and our passions for local music. Oh, and I almost forgot...9 is her lucky number!

Episode 31: Iowa Soul, Rnb, and Funk Music

If you google Iowa soul music, you get the following....

- A whole bunch of links to The Iowa Soul Festivals, which is more about bringing soul artists TO Iowa than about soul music FROM Iowa.
- Links to soul artists coming to Iowa
- The album "Eclectic Iowa Soul" by Rod Dugan, who seems to be from Texas but looks like he came from Iowa. If you want to check it out, it's on Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/music/artist/Rod_Dugan?id=Avh4vxljsd57kneffprrdrsljni&hl=en
- And if you look far enough, a couple of mentions of The Maytags, a mention here and there of other Iowa bands, and a couple of mentions of my hip hop episode!

If you google "Iowa soul music" with quotes, you get exactly 7 entries. Three are porn sites! Two link to The Maytags on Tumblr. One about Iowa folk musician, William Elliott Whitmore. And one about the writings of of a Ray Franklin.

Needless to say, soul and RnB, plus funk, are not produced widely in our predominantly rural and white state, But a few people besides Dustin Smith are playing this awesome genre. And I'm happy to present a few of them on this recent podcast episode!

Episode 29 - Guest Producer Craig Hlas of The Iowa Made Network, Part 2 of 2

Well, we present the second part of our shows with guest producer, Craig Hlas, of the Iowa Made Network!

As we said last time, Craig and his wife have a website that shows where you can get and find all sorts of stuff from and made in Iowa - Iowa Made Network! So with both of us being proud Iowans celebrating Iowans, I was more than happy to put a couple of podcasts from a list of tunes chosen by him!

In the last podcast episode, we featured some of Craig's folkier and more laid back tunes. This episode, we feature some of the poppier, and more upbeat stuff.

Playlists: The Other T Party

Well, if I had my act together, I've would have had a podcast for this all set to go today! Considering it's been *5* years! And especially since this subject is all topical and in the news! Probably would have got me some extra exposure!

But I don't have my act together, so instead you get this playlist I cobbled together today from YouTube videos.

Five years ago today, I put together a live music benefit show to earn money for Transformations Iowa, the transgender support group. A friend cleverly came up with the title. "The Other T Party", since the Republican Tea Party was all in the news at that time.

I'm still rather proud of that show. It spoiled me, because it went better than any other show I put on. Didn't have the attendance or make as much money as I would have liked.

But I did get all the speakers I wanted, a doctor whose has a majority of trans patients, the head of Transformations Iowa, the head One Iowa, and a mom with a transgender child. Plus, we had two drag queens performing!

And I got 4 1/4 of the bands I wanted! I was proud of that line up! The only band I didn't get was Poison Control Center, but Pat Fleming did a pre-Gloom Balloon solo set!

And the cherry on the sundae? I met my wonderful and awesome wife there! (Okay, we had been corresponding via Match.com and email before that, but it was the first time I met her in person, so it still counts!)

So only the Ladysoal video is from the actual show. Afraid there aren't any other videos. But the rest are live performances from around that time by the bands that were there!

Transformations Iowa web site: https://www.facebook.com/transformationsiowa/

If you're transgender, feel free to send them a Facebook message  or email them at transformations@gmail.com. They're a friendly bunch!

 Episode 17 - A Joe Lawler Dedication

If you don't know who Joe Lawler is, you're either not part of the central Iowa music scene or extremely out of it.

Joe recently quit, after 10 years, as the music reporter for Juice and The Des Moines Register, to concentrate on raising his family.

Many, on Facebook and elsewhere, have said their good byes and wished him well. But I felt he needed a little more.

So I put together this episode, using an article he wrote as a farewell, Joe Lawler's 12 favorite music moments with Juice, as inspiration, as well as asking a few folks from the Des Moines music scene to write a few words and choose a song to dedicate to Joe.

I couldn't get the rights to a few of the songs, so they aren't on the podcast. But I did include a video or audio embed in the blog post.

To read what everyone had to say about Joe and his Iowa-related favorite moments, go here - http://iowamusicshowcasesongs.blogspot.com/search/label/Joe%20Lawler%20Dedication

So, Joe, my fellow family man, comic book nerd, and music geek, this is for you...

For more information, click on the song or artists....

Opening - Juice song
Extra 1 - "Golddigger" by Murder Earth (Chad Taylor's dedication)
Song 1 - "Rhinemaidens" by The Envy Corps
Song 2 - "Infestation" by Dead Horse Trauma
Song 3 - "The Greatest Record Ever In The History of Pop Music" by Christopher the Conquered (Patrick Fleming's dedication)
Song 4 - "Pain" by La Strange
Song 5 - "Anthem" by The Maytags (Brian Campos's dedication)
Extra 2 - "Disconnect the Dots" by Of Montreal (Amedeo Rossi's dedication)
Song 6 - "Fuck Joe Lawler" by $trick9 / Song 7 - "Joe vs $trick9" by Joe Lawler
Closing - Juice song 2
