OTHER SOURCES: The Des Moines 4 Track Compilation Vol.1

Coming up next week, we have our first of two episodes highlighting the music from the Iowa record label, Sump Pump Records.

In the meantime, to help sorta give you a taste of what's to come, we are presenting a special compilation album that they put out.

"This compilation features 13 Des Moines bands recorded from April 2013-Feb. 2014, on a Tascam MKII 4 Track Cassette Portastudio. Comes packaged in a beautifully screen printed black & white sleeve illustrated by John Huffman. Package also contains a full download of the LP, liner notes and a collage..."

"I wanted to release a compilation that was representative of the music of Des Moines, regardless of age, genre, personal connections, etc. All the bands were asked to contribute one unreleased song 4 minutes or less (give or take a little). The decision to use the 4 track to record them was to level the playing field for everyone: creating a consistency by allowing access to the same engineer & equipment, the same options and the same limitations. I wanted to capture a black and white snapshot of what these bands sound like when you're standing right in front of them.

All tracks were recorded by Dan Hutchison on the same Tascam 414 MKII 4 Track cassette Portastudio."
- from the compilation's Bandcamp page

In case you're interested, Sump Pump Records also released a compilation of Madison artists:

UPDATE: The Madison compilation was mistakenly said to have been made by Sump Pump Records instead of just released by them. Thanks for correcting, Dan Hutchison!

OTHER SOURCES: An Iowa Noise Music Compilation

Although it doesn't have a big following, the noise music scene here is still strong. What the scene lacks in numbers, it makes up in dedication.

One of these days, I plan on doing a podcast episode on Iowa's more experimental music, including noise. But for now, I can give you this compilation put together by The Centipede Farm, an Iowa record label that has supported the noise scene for many years.

But in the meantime, here's a compilation put out by Centipede Farmer, who is well known to the noise and metal music scenes.

OTHER SOURCES: Pants Off Mixtape Vol. 1

We here at Iowa Music Showcase are actually big fans of the Pants OFF! Podcast!

If you haven't heard of it, you should give it a listen. "Pants OFF! Podcast is a FREE podcast: Everything music, art, & entertainment. Just two people having a conversation about the latter and other bullcrap."

"Now going on it's third year of existence, Pants OFF! Podcast has become an ever-evolving platform of information about bands and artists not just from the Des Moines area, but continually expanding its reach outward. Interviews have been conducted with nationally renounced artists like: Buzz Osborne (Melvins), Steve Brooks (Torche/Floor), Bob Nastanovich (Pavement), Trevor Strnad (Black Dahlia Murder), Josh Newton (Shiner), and many others.

"Constantly spotlighting native Iowa talent and continuing to seek out nationally recognized bands, Pants OFF! Podcast has been featured in stories on websites: Rollingstone, NME, Billboard, Stereogum, The PRP, Lambgoat, and others.

'These long form (mostly) one on one interviews give a retrospective look at a particular artist's body of work while examining their inspirations, successes, and struggles. The goal is to gain insights into the projects they are creating across a variety of mediums. At the very least, find some relation on a basic human level."
- from its Facebook page

I admit that we don't talk about it much here, because the main focus of this website is expose to the music itself. But if you're interested in hearing the back story to a whole bunch of Iowa music, the Pants Off Podcast is a great source!

But, now to celebrate doing over 100 episodes, they have put out an album featuring Iowa artists of various genres, as well as bits of their interviews!

And you should buy a copy, because all the money is going to directly to Iowa food charities. So you get some good music and get to do good at the same time! To quote Cityview music reporter, Joe Lawler, "So don’t be a cheap bastard, donate a few dollars and download a copy."

OTHER SOURCES: Lock N Load show and YouTube channel

Damn, I am started to feel like the kiss of death. By the time I get to a number of websites and such, it seems they have already died! Or maybe it's because I'm an old man and can't keep up with the cool happenings and going-ons of the youths!

I don't know, but here is a recently died website and show that featured a lot of bands from the Sioux City area as well as other parts of western Iowa and from Nebraska and South Dakota too!

"Before the Lock N’ Load Show aired live musical performances by local musicians on its Internet radio program, it was a sports talk show...

"It was a disaster, according to Foster. The interview didn’t go well and there were unwanted moments of silence – a rough start but the show must go on...

"The show has since found its niche with mixing comedic banter with fun segments like “Craigslist Missed Connections” and “Love and Lust Advice” while also including special guest appearances from local bands looking to promote their music. Episode 39 featured Johnny V and Big Earl from the blues rock band Premium Draft, who also performed live on air. The show brought in more than 1,200 viewers/listeners.

"MUTUAL PARTNERSHIP

"But 'back in the day,' the show was struggling to find background music to fill intermissions. Mainstream music was out of the question for obvious copyright reasons, so Foster and Lock N' Load producer Brandon Sorgdrager reached out to local artists to fill that empty portion of the online broadcast.

“'In return, we would do interviews with them,' said Sorgdrager. 'We were looking for a couple guests to come on and join us and it kind of went into the music and that went really well for us.'

"After a while, more musicians showed up on the Lock N’ Load Show, which is now becoming a promotional stop for local bands. The interviews are fairly relaxed and time is not a big factor.

“'It’s a half hour to an hour of them getting to talk about their stuff,' said Sordrager. 'It gives the audience a chance to get to know the artists.'

'Guests talk about their bands while their music gets played on the show during breaks. Foster said the show strives for an “equal opportunity” perspective when it comes to music genres featured on Lock N’ Load.

“'With the different artists, we like bringing in different genres,' he said. 'We have something for everyone. We’re not just hip hop or rock or country.'

"LOCAL MUSIC, WORLDWIDE AUDIENCE

"Clemons does not consider himself a rapper, per se. He condemns lyrics with violence and drug use, so instead he writes about his experiences. Clemons makes semi-regular appearances on the Internet radio show either as a guest promoting his new songs or just another guy to talk. He said he’s grateful for Lock N’ Load.

“'It means a lot knowing that we have someone that’s here in town able to push the music as well as they have,' said Clemons. ''They get it mainstream and give it to other listeners and viewers. This is the best way for everybody to share what they love doing.'

"Thanks to Lock N’ Load, Clemons was able to share his music video for the song 'Iowa Anthem,' a shout out to Sioux City. The video has received more than 3,500 views on YouTube and has maintained more than 80 likes.

"Dusty Ferris, bassist for local pop metal band Left Astray, said the Lock N' Load show is a 'blessing' for Sioux City musicians.

"'Local artists really don't have a voice anymore,' said Ferris. 'These guys are working with local artists so they can become regional, too.'

'Foster said he sets up a page for artists that appear on the show. He includes the links to bands’ and musicians’ social media and music (ReverbNation, Bandcamp) sites.

“'People worldwide can find them, read all about them, listen to their music and know how to get their music,' said Foster. 'It’s bringing the local music that we have here in Siouxland and making it worldwide.'

'The relationships the creators of the Lock N’ Load show made while supporting the Sioux City music scene have grown over time, according to Sorgdrager.

“'The artists have a need for us and we have a need for them,' he said.

'Foster describes it as a “mutual partnership” and never expected the success the show has gotten.

“'We help them by getting their stuff out there and they help us when we need them,' said Foster. 'The promoting of these artists or bands is our way of giving back to Siouxland. We all have our ways to give back -- well this is ours and we want the world to know Siouxland music rocks.'

OTHER SOURCES: DMMC'S 2006 compilation album

Since we recently covered the CarpeDM albums put out by The DMMC (Des Moines Music Coalition), with The Greater Des Moines Partnership, I thought we should cover an earlier work The DMMC did.

Turns out the CarpeDM albums were not The DMMC's first foray into compilation albums. Back when The DMMC first started, they came out with a compilation of Des Moines and Iowa artists called "Hear We Go".

From the BandCamp website:
"The hear and now. Here's to no more excuses. From the industry. Or the fans. Here's to no longer blaming the state for our state of mind. Here's to never being so close-minded that you can't believe for one tiny second that a single CD can put an entire city on the map. Here's to those who know good music can come from anywhere. And, to all of the naysayers, the never doers and the doubters who say it won't happen here. To those who say here is nowhere. Here it is. Hear we go.

"Special thanks: To the members of the DMMC, to our supporters, and to the musicians that enrich our lives and believe that a rising tide lifts all boats."

And for the 10th anniversary, the album was put on BandCamp. Thanks to the suggestion and urging of Iowa Music Showcase! And you can download it for FREE!

So go get yourself a taste of what was cool and happening in Des Moines's alternative music scene a decade ago!

OTHER SOURCES: Band Bombshell's "Completely Covered"

"Completely Covered" was an interesting little project started by Chad Taylor, former music critic of "Cityview", when he was managing editor of the now defunct Des Moines music website, Band Bombshell.

Chad, though, described the project better than I ever could on his own website, Culture Myth and on the Band Bombshell:

"Almost exactly two years ago, in January of 2015, I came up with an ambitious idea.

"I was, at the time, the Managing Editor for a site called Band Bombshell...

"...I came to Erika with what I still feel is the best idea I've ever come up with: gather together 10 local acts, give them all a single, well-known song, and have them cover it. The idea of 10 different points of view on the same song intrigued the hell out of me, and everyone I pitched the initial idea to was just as excited. Erika loved it, we got Nova Labs' resident genius Bryon Dudley on board to help with the production side, and we were off and running. Eventually, we wound up doing a second edition, with new acts and a different song.

"The bands almost universally hated the songs they were given; seven acts would wind up not turning anything in at all. Both editions were plagued by recording delays due to scheduling conflicts, and ultimately traffic remained flat, so the songs themselves were almost completely ignored.

"The actual songs were absolutely glorious."
- from the Culture Myth post, Band Bombshell, Cover Songs and a Cluster Fuck: A Retrospective

"The idea in and of itself wasn't a new one. As soon as the first song was ever written, the first cover song probably followed closely behind...

"There were, however, a couple of things that made "Completely Covered" unique. Firstly, most cover song projects give the bands involved at least a certain modicum of choice... But for "Completely Covered" what intrigued me was... how a bunch of different minds and talents would choose to look at exactly the same material. It was meant to come off less like a tribute CD, and more as an examination of perspectives.

"But more importantly, of course, it was local. Musical projects that try to incorporate a large number of Des Moines-area musicians are few and far between. There's the occasional local music festival.. Juice has been producing their terrific "Side Sessions" video series since August, and it really highlights what kind of fun, creative things you can do with local music in Des Moines when you've got a little money to throw at your ideas.

"But Band Bombshell had no cash, and one really can not heap enough praise on Bryon Dudley and Nova Labs for his willingness to hop into the project with both feet, and do all of the recording and mastering for nothing more than the fun of the project, a banner ad and a hearty thank you. The series also stands as a credit to the musicians who took part. When I pitched the idea to them all, they were given the basic premise, but were not told what song they were going to be working on until after everyone had said yes. It was a bit of a gamble for everyone involved and one that required more than a little adventurous spirit. It was incredibly fun to watch it all come together."
- from the Culture Myth post, Covering a Local Music Retrospective, Day 2

"The concept was simple: to see how different people, with different tastes and influences, would approach the same material. How much different would a song sound, if it were tackled by a metal act as opposed to a country one? The idea was intended to both challenge the artists artistically and creatively, while simultaneously showcasing the wealth of talent within our state's borders. Plus, it just sounded fun as hell.

"And so, at the beginning of the new year, these are the ground rules we gave our 10 participants:

"The song may have been written by a different artist, but it's yours now. Own it. Don't like the chorus? Change it. Hate that one verse? Drop it. Change the perspective, add to it, strip it down, make it your own. You've got 30 days to re-imagine, write, rehearse and record your cover. Don't tell anyone. With those scant instructions, we turned everyone loose. On the back end, the absolutely amazing Bryon Dudley at Nova Labs in Ames generously offered his studio and his time to help bands get their tracks recorded and mixed, and it really can't be overstated: this project would not have happened without him.

"For the first round, our song choice was a controversial one. It's by an artist who's polarizing on just about every front. Not all of the lyrics are appreciated by everyone, and people have found the subject matter offensive. So why did we choose it? We wanted to see what people would do with a song they didn't necessarily like."
- from the Band Bombshell post, COMPLETELY COVERED: 10 BANDS, 1 SONG

"Our song of choice, Kanye West's "Gold Digger", was not the most popular of choices. Kanye isn't the most popular of artists among the bands we tapped, and "Gold Digger" is far from his best song, so covering it—and making it into something entertaining—required a little more effort on the part our bands. Not everybody was up to it, and three of our bands dropped out, with varying degrees of grace."
- from the Band Bombshell post, COMPLETELY COVERED: THE STORY THUS FAR

Chad has written a post of each version in the first series on this Culture Myth website. You can read them here...

OTHER SOURCES: Music Tsunami

Well, due to a nasty flu bug, as well as a bad case of procrastination and distraction, I haven't finished this month's podcast. So instead, you're getting a kinda sorta preview.

The next podcast is music picked by guest producer, Trinity Neal, who founded Music Tsunami, an independent music site here in Des Moines.

So this week's post will look at the site and present the compilation album that they put out.

Music Tsunami describes itself as in the following way:

"This page is to give support and pay tribute to: All our musicians, bands and artists that are sharing their talents with us. They struggle in their daily lives to trade their passion in for pennies so that we can have music in our world.

"This is an ALL genre promotion page. You will not be turned down because of the genre you or your band plays. All of you are invited as well as encouraged to post to your music, pics, videos, show information, merch etc..."
- from their Facebook page

"This site is dedicated to give support and pay tribute to: All our musicians, bands and artists that are sharing their talents with us. They struggle in their daily lives to trade their passion in for pennies so that we can have music in our world. Support local musicians. Wherever you are go see a show! Buy their shit and talk about them with your buds. THANK YOU FOR ROCKIN OUR SOULS!"

OTHER SOURCES: Your Local Library! Especially if you live in Des Moines, Iowa City, or Omaha!

Yes, that's right! That great and awesome American and international institution, the free public library! Almost every town in America has one!

Okay, so I'm sure not every library in Iowa has music from Iowa bands. All I can say is, then fix it! Every library I know is more than happy to take suggestions from patrons! Especially if the work is by a local!

And if you're a local band or artist, I have no doubt whatsoever that any nearby library would be more than happy to carry your cd!

Okay, yes, people could then get your music for free. But I think it's much more likely that someone, who doesn't know you, will discover you than that someone will go search the library to get your cd for free.

Plus, you'll be doing your part to help your local library!

Here's three links about submitting to libraries. They're about submitting books, but it should be pretty much the same process for your cd.

If you skipped these links and didn't read them, don't just drop your cd at the donate spot or on the counter! Go see or write to the person in charge of acquisitions!

For Des Moinians, if my googling is right, Marci Behm is the Centralized Acquisitions Librarian.

While we're talking about The Des Moines Public Library, here's some links to many of the Iowa artists that our local library carries:

96 items under the search term "Iowa music" - these include books, films, etc. -

But the Des Moines library has nothing on Iowa City! You Iowa Citians are so lucky!

The Iowa City Public Library has the Local Music Project!

But in the words of The Iowa City Public Library:

"Iowa City and Johnson County musicians have kindly (and bravely) leased us the right to offer their music to you. You can thank them by playing these albums often and going out to see them perform live!

"If you have a library card and password, and live in Iowa City or an area that contracts with us (Iowa City, rural Johnson County, Hills or University Heights) you can download this music. Please share the love (but not the files) with friends.

"No overdue fees! Put it on your phone. Play it at parties. Turn it up."

Not to be outdone, The Omaha Public Library, in partnership with Hear Nebraska, has started Download Nebraska.

The extra bonus with this site is that, although, like Iowa City, you have to be a library cardholder to download, ANYBODY can stream the music.

"To kickstart the project, Hear Nebraska curated the first 50 albums with any eye toward diversity, as well as album quality. Contracts with bands designate the albums to be removed from the site in July 2017. Hear Nebraska and the Omaha Public Library plan to accept submissions for the next round of albums, and will report on how that will work within the next couple months in this daily news column."

Now get out and go support your local library like you would your local bands!
