Episode 34: Happy Hawkeye Halloween 2016, Part 1 of 4 - A Branch Snaps

Bwahahaha! So you dare to return this year! To once again face our ghoulish, ghastly tales of terrors from Iowa's musicians.

Very well! But be prepared for tales of murder, ghost bandits, and Edgar Allan Poe told with a hip hop beat!

And it starts with a new frightening version of our theme song from Jessica Villegas of Foxholes and Honeycreepers! Thank you, Jessica. I think we'll let you live! Though maybe in chains to play for us for all eternity!

Well, we'll see how many of you return next week for the second of four episodes! Bwahahahha! Bwahhahahahaha!

PLAYLISTS: Iowa Halloween Music

Okay, Iowa music scene, I love you and think you're awesome for the most part, but I have a complaint to make with you.

You have disappointed me and let me down big time!

How? you may ask. How could we have disappointed Dan OlderMusicGeek, famous publisher and producer of Iowa Music Showcase?

Let me tell you.

As far as I can tell, I am the ONE and ONLY source of Halloween music by Iowan artists and bands.

I have hunted high and low on the internet, Spotify, SoundCloud, YouTube, and Google, looking for a podcast, blog entry, or playlist on Iowa Halloween music, and have come up with nothing! NOTHING!

The closest I got is this compilation put together Omaha hip hop artist, Haunted Gauntlet. At least, one of our neighbors has the Halloween spirit!

An article on compilation from Hear Nebraska:

So Iowans, I am giving you a homework assignment!

No, don't argue! You brought this upon yourself! You have done this earlier, I wouldn't have to assign this to you!

By this time next year, I expect to find some podcasts featuring scary music by Iowans. Or failing that, then I expect to see some Iowa Halloween Music playlists on Spotify, SoundCloud, and YouTube! So get out there and make some playlists and start promoting Iowa artists!

In the meantime, since I'm the ONLY ONE doing this, here's a playlist I put together on Spotify! You're welcome, you ungrateful whelps!

PLAYLISTS: Random Iowa Music SoundCloud Playlist 1

Well, I've been making playlist of music from Spotify that is picked at random using shuffle. But I decided there is a lot of unheard Iowa music on SoundCloud. So I go on there once in a while and hunt down Iowa artists and follow them.

If you're an artist I'm NOT following, let me know, and I start following you. Just send a link to iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com!

So here's some artists from SoundCloud, totally picked at random. I even used a random number generator to pick them! The playlists features electronic music, world music, hip hop, folk, gospel, and piano music!

IOWA MUSIC SHOWCASE PODCAST - Episode 33: A Chad Taylor Dedication

https://twitter.com/chadtaylor

"On this particular day, the youngest, tiniest, most blatantly adorable of the children becomes intently interested in what I am doing on my computer, and why, exactly, none of those activities involve watching Elmo. Truth be told, she's not really listening to me as I explain the blog." - Chad Taylor on his blog, Culture Myth

There's no two ways about it. Chad is a controversial figure in the music scene. I had more than one person request NOT to be part of this tribute.

But I had number who were happy to be a part of this. I'm obviously in the second camp, or I wouldn't be doing this.

Can Chad come off as rude and obnoxious? Sorry, Chad, but yes you can.

But part of this stems from Chad's desire to speak from the heart and speak straight and honestly. He doesn't pussyfoot around. He tells it as he sees it.

And some times Chad doesn't like what he sees and isn't afraid to say so.

To be fair, though, some times he does like what he sees and he doesn't hold back on that either!

But I'll say it right now. I think Chad is something the Des Moines music scene needed!

Cheerleaders are important and needed. I consider that part of my job on this web site.

But cheerleaders aren't enough in any artistic endeavor. You also need someone who will speak honestly, and tell you if you're not doing so hot.

Does it hurt? Yeah. Does it suck? Yeah. No one wants to hear something they worked hard on isn't that great.

But someone can't improve if they'll only told "Good job!" and given a ribbon just for participating!

Did I always agree with Chad? Hell no. But I'm grateful that the Des Moines music scene had someone who wasn't afraid to speak his mind.

And I think Des Moines is going to be hurting without Chad's honesty and straight opinion.

So I'm grateful that Chad loved and cared about the Des Moines scene enough to take that role.
And if you read enough of his stuff, you should he did care, and he did love the local scene.

So, Chad, this is just my way of saying thank you. And I know I'm not the only one who will miss you!

"I look at her giant, stupid brown baby eyes for a moment, then do a Google image search for Elmo. Ellie loses her shit."
