"I want to see Iowa bands, but I don't know any.  And I'm afraid if I go to a show, they'll all suck! Then I'll have wasted my money!"

I have two things to say to you!

One - Don't be such a wimp! Most shows featuring local bands are only five dollars!

And two - There are a lot of places to check out local bands live for FREE!!

As I am writing this in my hometown of Des Moines, our arts festival - which featured 3 stages of music filled mostly by Iowa artists - was two weekends ago. Our town's annual Jazz in July - featuring local and national acts - is just beginning. And this weekend is 80/35 - featuring four stages with local and regional artists.

And you know what else is in common about these three besides the fact that they feature Iowa artists and bands? They're FREE! (Yes, 80/35 is not free, but those two stages are!)

I did a cursory look around Iowa on the internet to see what free festivals featuring local artists I could find. I put the ones I found below, but I'm sure I could find plenty more if I wanted to make the time.

It seems many towns and wineries have a free music series, where they have a local band play once a week for FREE. Also, many towns have local bands play at their town's festivals, again for FREE!

And to help you, below is a list of all the free music festivals and music series in Iowa that I found in my not very deep search! I'm sure you could find more and one near you if you don't see anything nearby on this list! So get out there and discover a band you're dying to see again!

OTHER SOURCES - The "Under the Mic" compilations

Before there Iowa Music Showcase... Before there was CarpeDM... Even before the likes of  "Des Moines 4 Track Compilation", "Iowa City Song Project", or "Sonic Harvest"... There was the Under the MIC(roscope) compilations!

Back in 2000's, central Iowa musicians, Adam Haug and Micah Sturdevant, came up a crazy idea.

"The mission is to have local musicians support one another regardless of style or status and to give everyone a proper analysis for the current state of music in the area. Let's put ourselves under the mic- We are bound to discover something we never knew about each other and most importantly how we can operate more effectively as a community of one."

They sent out requests for music from central Iowa regardless of the genre. Then they put the first 80 minutes worth they got into a compilation, and gave it away as a cassette. They did this 5 times, using cd's later.

And they put on some live shows to pay for it.

"Last Saturday, ten area bands descended on the Vaudeville Mews in Des Moines for the latest iteration of Under the Microscope.

"The concert is part of a project to help highlight bands from Ames and Des Moines.

"'It's good for local music,' said organizer Adam Haug. 'It gets bands that are known and unknown on stage.'

"The concert is only the final part of the project. Now in its third iteration, Under the Microscope is held approximately every six months, and consists of both a compilation CD and a live show. The UTM staff solicit bands in the 515 area code using such tools as MySpace and 515crew.com, a music-oriented message board.

"Haug said the staff received a great deal of submissions, and putting together the lineups for the CD and the concert was difficult.

"The CD has 25 bands on it, but the show can only host ten to twelve.

"Bands are selected for the project with an eye toward variety and a good performance."

Episode 30 - Iowa Hip-Hop and Rap

This podcast episode is dedicated to my college student daughter who gave this middle age man a lesson on what trap music is with examples!

But I would like to point out that I still knew what EDM meant but she did!


WARNING: Adult language and situations are featured in some of these songs.

This week, we present a podcast featuring some of the hip hop and rap music being made in our fair state.

To outsiders, Iowa might seem a strange place to find hip hop, but if anybody does even half a search, they would find plenty be made here.

The only issue is it hasn't got the coverage it should. I'm happy to help fight against that with this episode and these 7 songs, and two excerpts of an eighth!
