PLAYLISTS: Valentine's Day - Iowa Style

Well, back when Joe Lawler worked for Juice instead of Cityview, he put together a playlist of songs by Iowa artists for a wedding issue of Juice.

"If you go to a lot of weddings, you start to hear the same songs over and over again. “Maybe I’m Amazed” for the 14th time? How original.

"There are plenty of great songs by Iowa musicians that deserve to be on your wedding playlist. Here’s an assortment that will save your guests from having to hear “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” again."
- from Joe Lawler in the original article

I asked Joe if he wanted to add anything to what he had written before, and this is what he had to say:

"Wow, I don't remember the process that went into making this list. It was for a wedding issue of Juice, which were always a nightmare to put together. So many venues to call. I think I asked for love songs by Iowans on Facebook or Twitter. There's some solid stuff here, but I'm not sure I listened to them in order before you made this playlist. Someone should get married, use this and report back on how it went."

All the songs are the YouTube playlist unless YouTube took down my video of the Poison Control Center song! Spotify and SoundCloud are missing a few.

As a bonus, I felt this song was appropriate:

IOWA MUSIC SHOWCASE PODCAST - Episode 33: A Chad Taylor Dedication

https://twitter.com/chadtaylor

"On this particular day, the youngest, tiniest, most blatantly adorable of the children becomes intently interested in what I am doing on my computer, and why, exactly, none of those activities involve watching Elmo. Truth be told, she's not really listening to me as I explain the blog." - Chad Taylor on his blog, Culture Myth

There's no two ways about it. Chad is a controversial figure in the music scene. I had more than one person request NOT to be part of this tribute.

But I had number who were happy to be a part of this. I'm obviously in the second camp, or I wouldn't be doing this.

Can Chad come off as rude and obnoxious? Sorry, Chad, but yes you can.

But part of this stems from Chad's desire to speak from the heart and speak straight and honestly. He doesn't pussyfoot around. He tells it as he sees it.

And some times Chad doesn't like what he sees and isn't afraid to say so.

To be fair, though, some times he does like what he sees and he doesn't hold back on that either!

But I'll say it right now. I think Chad is something the Des Moines music scene needed!

Cheerleaders are important and needed. I consider that part of my job on this web site.

But cheerleaders aren't enough in any artistic endeavor. You also need someone who will speak honestly, and tell you if you're not doing so hot.

Does it hurt? Yeah. Does it suck? Yeah. No one wants to hear something they worked hard on isn't that great.

But someone can't improve if they'll only told "Good job!" and given a ribbon just for participating!

Did I always agree with Chad? Hell no. But I'm grateful that the Des Moines music scene had someone who wasn't afraid to speak his mind.

And I think Des Moines is going to be hurting without Chad's honesty and straight opinion.

So I'm grateful that Chad loved and cared about the Des Moines scene enough to take that role.
And if you read enough of his stuff, you should he did care, and he did love the local scene.

So, Chad, this is just my way of saying thank you. And I know I'm not the only one who will miss you!

"I look at her giant, stupid brown baby eyes for a moment, then do a Google image search for Elmo. Ellie loses her shit."

 Episode 17 - A Joe Lawler Dedication

If you don't know who Joe Lawler is, you're either not part of the central Iowa music scene or extremely out of it.

Joe recently quit, after 10 years, as the music reporter for Juice and The Des Moines Register, to concentrate on raising his family.

Many, on Facebook and elsewhere, have said their good byes and wished him well. But I felt he needed a little more.

So I put together this episode, using an article he wrote as a farewell, Joe Lawler's 12 favorite music moments with Juice, as inspiration, as well as asking a few folks from the Des Moines music scene to write a few words and choose a song to dedicate to Joe.

I couldn't get the rights to a few of the songs, so they aren't on the podcast. But I did include a video or audio embed in the blog post.

To read what everyone had to say about Joe and his Iowa-related favorite moments, go here - http://iowamusicshowcasesongs.blogspot.com/search/label/Joe%20Lawler%20Dedication

So, Joe, my fellow family man, comic book nerd, and music geek, this is for you...
