Favorites of 2017 (and the State of the Website speech and boring statistics)

Well, we entered the fifth year of the Iowa Music Showcase. Unfortunately, we were gone for over half of the previous year! Hopefully, things will go better this year!

We will include all the podcasts, videos, and articles we featured last year. We've also added the podcast, Audible Farm, an interview podcast from local musician Peter Stockdale of the Des Moines punk band, 3 Finger Betty, and Iowa metal band, Unity.

We also, on an irregular basis, will be featuring older articles, audio, and video, from sources like KRUI 89.7 FM in Iowa City, Des Moines Music Coalition, KURE radio in Ames, as well as older websites like Lock N Load from the Sioux Falls/Sioux City area, Des Noise, Des Moines is Not Boring, Iowaves, and Band Bombshell, among others.

I'm not doing any podcast of the favorite tunes from the Iowa Music Showcase podcast, because - 1) I haven't had the time, and 2) we only did four podcasts last year! But below I'll list all the boring top ten's I've listed on previous years.

Also, we may fewer Iowa Music Showcase podcasts, depending on how time and whatnot goes for me. But I will continue to feature playlists, compilation albums, videos, and other websites where you can find Iowa music.

But in the five months we were running last year, we did manage to do a showcase of Sump Pump Records. And if I can get the podcasts up and running again, I'd be happy to showcase other Iowa labels!

IOWA MUSIC SHOWCASE PODCAST - Episode 59: Favorites of 2017 (and The State of The Website Speech)

Howdy all! And welcome to Year 4 of this website and podcast! It was 3 years ago on Jan 4, 2015, when the first post and podcast went up.s

Oh, how things have changed! This website was originally just a place to put the podcast. But since then, I've add playlists from Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud, and BandCamp, and soon ReverbNation, to our repertoire! And also, on the occasional post about Other Sources, you can hear and find Iowa music, like compilation albums, other podcasts, other websites, among other places.

And now, starting since last month, we have added a new interview podcast, Your Own Private Iowa, featuring one- to two-hour interviews from Richard Sutton with Iowa musicians. And once a week, we present a video of a live performance from an Iowa jazz or classical act on Jazzman Joe Videos. And once a month, we present a video of an alternative act on our Fester Rage Videos.

And soon, we will be reprinting Culture Myth articles from former Cityview music writer, Chad Taylor!

Also, on the Iowa Music Showcase podcasts, I manage to get covers by Iowa artists or photographers on them! This is a trend I would like to continue. So if you know any Iowa artists or photographers who would be interested, please send them my way!

A Whole Bunch of Boring Statistics on Favorites of 2016 and the Favorite Posts of the Year

Well, once again, for you big math nerds and fans of Top Ten, I have a whole bunch of list and statistics for our various websites.

Episode 41: Favorites of 2016

Well, we finished another year here at Iowa Music Showcase.

I changed things a bit here. Afraid I couldn't keep the biweekly podcasts up, so now they could at least once a month, though I still threw in some extra ones when I could.

Instead, I started a weekly post. I think this is working better in presenting you with more Iowa music. I can now show other places where you can get Iowa music, like other podcasts, compilation albums, playlists, and other websites.

Also, by doing a playlist at least once a month, I can play artists that I might not be able to get a hold of and can't get permission to play their material on the podcast.

Looking over the past year's podcasts, I feel pretty good about what I've done.

Did some on stuff I hadn't done previously, like an Iowa musical, Iowa electronic music, and Iowa soul, RnB, and funk. But still got a retrospective in on an Iowa band, Peace, Love, and Stuff. And did 4 Halloween episodes and 3 Christmas ones!

In this coming year, I have big plans.

With the podcasts, I still plan on doing a retrospective on an Iowa band, but this time one from the 80s! There will probably be less theme shows and more genre shows so I can catch up on submissions. Listeners seem to prefer the genre shows anyway. And I will tackle a couple of genres that I haven't covered yet!

But we'll still have Halloween and Holiday episodes at the end of the year. My list of songs for both is already growing.

And if I can find enough material by May, I'd loved to do a Star Wars theme episode for Star Wars 40th anniversary. So if you know any Iowa bands and artists who have done a Star Wars-related song, write to me at iowamusicshowcase@gmail.com!

I will still continue to do at least one playlist a month, but I plan on doing some featuring new music that's coming out rather than just random music ones. So if you are a band or artist, send me your Spotify, YouTube, and SoundCloud links!

And last, but not least, don't forget that on Sat, Feb 4, at Lefty's Live Music, we have Iowa Music Showcase LIVE! Nine different bands from nine different genres! Showing the diversity of the Des Moines and Iowa music scene!

A Whole Bunch of Boring Statistics on Favorites of 2016

Just in case, you're a big number nerd and just curious, here's a whole lot of info on my websites for 2016.

As I stated in the actual post, the songs for the podcast were picked by looking up which song - on that particular podcast - was viewed the most on the Iowa Music Showcase Songs post.

I put the most viewed non-Christmas song on the podcast, because the 9 of the top 10 songs posts were Christmas tunes. You Iowans like your Christmas music! And, quite frankly, that's totally okay with me!

But for those curious, here the closest thing I have to a top ten list...

Episode 24: Favorites of 2015

Well, Iowa Music Showcase is one year old!

Not quite as popular as I hoped it be, but it is getting noticed.

We've been mentioned on a few other podcasts. Had one episode with over 200 listens, and a couple more with over 100. And every episode seems to have at least 50 listens from our various locations, Bandcamp, YouTube, and SoundCloud.

We've also had some big names on here, like Greg Brown and The Envy Corps.

And shortly after Green Death was on our show, they signed on to a major label! - The same could happen to you! Send your submission today!

And Patresa Hartman was only making 1 lousy cent a week off Spotify. But on the week she was on IMSC, it quadrupled to 4 cents!

And coming later in the year, we will have a bunch of genre-based shows including another metal show and a classical music show!

Also another guest producer is coming probably in March. And February will include the long delayed Peace, Love, and Stuff retrospective.

And I still have a goal of getting Slipknot on this show somehow! So if you know anybody from the Slipknot camp, help me out!

Anyhoo, this episode features songs from the most listened to, read, watched, or downloaded blog and/or podcast we put out.

The song chosen to represent to the podcast episode was just the one most read in Iowa Music Showcase Songs.
