This is just another in our long series of playlists. And like the name says, this one features the latest music by Iowa artists that I could find on Bandcamp. It features a blend of experimental, metal, instrumental, and electronic music, with a punk tune as well!
I had to reschedule this week's planned guest (stay tuned for February 3rd...). I've been obsessively working on a new composition for the past few days, so I decided that I'd use this week's show to present, demonstrate, and test drive some components of MODAL EXPLORATION!

Carlos is back on co-host duty as we discuss the Feed Me Weird Things concert series with its director, Chris Wiersema! Chris brings avant-garde and experimental musicians from all over the country to Iowa City and pairs them with equally adventurous local acts, many of which have also played at our concerts and/or been featured on this radio show. Once again, using a random sampling method, we picked out 5 videos featuring Iowa artists.
And diverse lot this is! We start out with the countrified pop of The Nadas, then some experimental music with saxaphone, a polka parody, some more experimental music, and finally close out with some hard rock, showing once again the diversity of Iowa music!

Last week I teased a guest appearance from Kent Williams (aka chaircrusher). Unfortunately he had to go out of town and couldn't join me in the studio, BUT he was kind enough to record some brand new music and an interview with his friend and collaborator Derek Piotr. In his place, Michele Guild returned to co-host with me in her third appearance on the show. We closed out today's show by brainstorming ideas for our upcoming project, the impedecast.

Usually when we have a concert, I do a preview on the preceding radio show. I don't really feel that's necessary this time as Friday's show will be Wombat with special guests. I'm pretty sure our radio listeners are already familiar with Wombat. If not, check out episodes 10 and 15 of this podcast. I was going to present the first playlist last week, but instead put together some playlist for The Uncertainty Festival coming up this weekend. I'll be there Friday night. Say hi if you see a balding, overweight, middle age man in Clark Kent glasses!
But since I didn't put that playlist up last week, you guys get a twofer! I've got the playlist I made last week, plus a new up-to-date one.
Over half of the first one was hip hop. But there are some instrumentals in there, one rock, one electronic music, and one piano music.
The second is more eclectic featuring hip hop, electronic music, rock, and a singer-songwriter.
The snow's got me down, but not down enough to stay out of the KRUI studio to record another episode of iHearIC Radio! No guests tonight, just me alone on a mic playing recordings from past concerts. Just as it was in the beginning. Back to basics.

It's a fairly eclectic collection of blues, electronic music, folk music, indie music, among other genres. So have a listen, and if it sounds good, drop by Ames and check out the bands live!

"Hailing from from Iowa City, Lwa usually consists of 2 core members who use a battery of electronic devices (from the hand built to the scavanged from garage sale, university surplus, etc) to produce strange aural landscapes. From the duo's inception in '03, their focus has shifted from cathartic, impenetrable tidal noise to dark skeletal pop structures with the collaboration of NIMBY's homemade electric drums, to their current mode. Collecting a great number of field recordings, the duo now focus on restrained and minimal tones emulating and embellishing the base of field recordings.
"Through out these years, the group has been active in their community, though touring is rare. They've played with many like-minded sound artists such as: Tim Hecker, Greg Davies, Kent Williams, Rene Hell, C. Spencer Yeh, Wet Hair, Boris, The Tanks, Melt-Banana, Outer Space, Moth Cock, David Daniell, Wolf Eyes, Raglani, Hair Police, Awesome Color, Sightings, Mountains, Gowns, and many, many other talented out-artists.
"Their recorded output is rare, since they primarily focus on a preparing a different set for each of their gigs. There have been a few tapes, CDRs, and a split lathe 10 inch. All in limited quantity. There exist several studio outings, though the bulk of their work has been documented in various live settings."

Well, yours truly, Dan OlderMusicGeek, had to take a few weeks off to get some things in my life back in proper order, leaving me no time for Iowa Music Showcase.
But we're back now! And to celebrate, I created a playlist of songs from Iowa artists about coming back and returning, or just doing something again.
Again, as with most of our Spotify playlists, these songs are in no particular order and are best listened to in shuffle play.
