IOWA BLUES SHOWCASE PODCAST - Episode 139: Woman in Blues 2.0

Barb Baker Miller

This is the first of two shows. The previous women in blues shows did not feature the whole show in its entirely so tonight we fix that! On August 1 2014 The Blues Army of Des Moines in cooperation with the Hull Ave (owned then by Thomas Morris) put on its first Women in Blues Show. Tonight we listen to the first hour of the show. We start with the house band the Bad Boys of the Blues (Tom Gary, Jon East, Norman Sue, and Scotty Hartung) then in order April May, Barb Baker Miller, Michelle Baldwin, Bluebird Page with Jean Marie, and Krista Haugland, and Madam Jules!

This show was a lot of fun and a lot of work to recreate. I had to search for all the tracks, and try to piece together which came first. special thanks to Lee Bell who not only recorded the shows, but left me hints on the tracks on where they belonged. Rest in Peace my friend you are truly missed!

IOWA BLUES SHOWCASE PODCAST - Jimmy Pryor at the Hull Ave 1999 Clarence Key Jr. and John Woody Wood

A special Memorial day tribute to WWII veteran Jimmy "The Midnite Cowboy" Pryor. This show was unmarked, but listening to the show was probably Memorial day weekend of 1999. It starred Jimmy Pryor with the Bad Boys of the blues (Tom Gary, Scott Long, Jim Farr, and John Wood) This was the original Sunday Night Blues Showcase at the Hull Ave.

Tonight we hear Jimmy play his shuffle, and slow blues standards! Then Clarence Key Jr. joins the fun followed by Woody.

The crowd was very lively that night and its fun to listen to them banter with the band and Jimmy!

Please like, subscribe, and share. If on Podbean follow! Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Other Sources: Iowa Blues Showcase Podcast and the Best of the Blues in Des Moines website

Tom Gary has been part of the central Iowa blues scene for decades.

"Tom Gary is an extraordinarily gifted piano player and singer. He was born and raised in Des Moines where he learned the Blues in high school. He played professionally in college in 1982. Tom moved to Kansas City in 1986 and performed there until 1990 with Lonesome & Dangerous and with John Paul and the Hell Hounds. From 1991-1996 he performed with his own Tom Gary Blues Band in Des Moines and toured with his band in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri, and Kansas. In 1993 he founded the Central Iowa Blues Society in Des Moines. In 1999 he founded the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame in Des Moines. Tom resides in Storm Lake, Iowa where he is an Adjunct Professor of History at Buena Vista University and continues to teach a Blues Series he started in 2005."
(from a Chronicle Times article on The Tom Gary Blues Band)

And he puts all this to good use with a podcast, Iowa Blues Showcase Podcast, and a couple of blogs. One blog, Blues Historian, features the podcast as well as videos and insights that The Blues Historian cares to share. The second blog, Best of the Blues in Des Moines, is actually videos of blues performances in Tom's and my hometown of Des Moines.

Below I've featured an early episode of Iowa Blues Showcase Podcast and the most recent two as of the time of this writing. Below that, I've included the three most popular videos from Best of the Blues in Des Moines.
