Welcome to another of our Other Sources entries, where I let you know of other places you can find and hear Iowa music.
Today, we look at the YouTube channel of Jazzman Joe, a staple of the central Iowa jazz scene for ages. This man has videotaped literally hundreds of jazz performances, from both local and visting acts, in the state of Iowa, including many from various jazz festivals in the state. And you can find these on his YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/jazzmanjoe100.
We present the second half of our retrospective on a "great little band from central Iowa"!
In this episode, we present some of the later stuff in their career, when they started embracing more of the vintage and rockabilly sound, brought on part by a new drummer and bassist.
We also include stuff from their Raygun EP and their final album. And like last time, we include some rare and unreleased material.
And right now, IMP is having a contest for bands and artists with ANY kind of connection to Iowa.
"The IMP Songwriting Showcase is a songwriting showcase organized by IMP with support of the Iowa Arts Council and other local partners. Artists and/or bands have the chance to record an original song at Flat Black studios as well as perform at a concert at the Des Moines Social Club on June 2, 2016."
- also from their website
As part of this showcase, they have two playlists - one on SoundCloud and one on YouTube - featuring all these Iowa artists. You can find both of these playlists at the bottom of this blog post.
And you can vote EVERY day for your favorite! (I've been voting for The Starry Nights!) Just go here - http://littlevillagemag.com/imp/ - and pick your favorite!
Well, day job overtime is eating into my podcasting time. So part two of the Peace, Love, and Stuff retrospective is going up until next week.
Instead, we present another edition of Other Sources, our feature where we introduce you to other places where you can find and hear Iowa music.
This week, we cover Iowa Block Radio.
They describe themselves as "Block Radio is the Only platform in Iowa Dedicated to the Great Artists who Inspire it. Our vision here is to bring you the best of what Iowa has to offer!"
And... "'Iowa Block Radio' Is The Best Source of Iowa Local Music. We keep our Audience up to date on the latest events happening in Iowa. You will also enjoy weekly interviews with some of the best artists in the midwest. Iowa Block Radio Is a gateway into the future of midwest music."
I would argue with that description. I don't even say that about Iowa Music Showcase!
But they are a good source for Iowa hip-hop and rap music, which is what they cover. They present 3 podcasts a week running from one hour to three. Five of the last six episodes were 3 hours.
On the bottom of the page, we present the lastest episode that came out as of the time of this writing.
Our first one is just some playlists that The DMMC (The Greater Des Moines Music Coalition) has on SoundCloud and YouTube.
For any who don't know, The DMMC is the group here in Des Moinses that puts on the 80/35 music festival as well as Gross Domestic Product and Little Big Fest.
They do more than that, though. To quote from their website:
"What exactly does the DMMC do?
We make 80/35 music festival happen.
We make Little BIG Fest and Gross Domestic Product happen.
We produce Music University.
We provide startup funding/sponsorships to music related events and organizations.
We promote Iowa music on our blog, in our newsletter, and through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram by sharing news, upcoming shows, music, videos, reviews, and more.
We work in conjunction with other arts organizations in central Iowa through efforts, such as Capital Crossroads to strategize, plan, and execute music-related concepts that will have a positive impact on our community."
But in the blog post, I'm just going to deal with the playlists they make.
Before their festivals, they often have a contest for people to choose three bands that they would like to be in the festival. They make a playlist for all the submissions. These playlists are a great way to hear a bunch of different Iowa bands of various genres!
On the bottom of the page, I've included the three playlists they have up on SoundCloud at the time of this writing!
The DMMC also have two playlists of Iowa music up on their YouTube channel - https://www.youtube.com/user/DesMoinesMusic. I should warn you that there is a good bit of overlapping and redundancy on the two playlists.
The Channel also features videos and interviews dealing with the Des Moines and Iowa music scene.
